Varicose Veins Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves in your vein don't work the way they should. These valves usually keep blood flowing from your limbs back to your heart. But in some cases, the valves can malfunction, allowing blood to pool in one area. Over time, the vein swells due to backed-up blood flow.

Varicose veins can appear in any area of the body, but they're especially prevalent in the lower legs. They may look twisted, gnarled, or swollen. Your varicose veins might be deep blue or purple and have a raised appearance.

Are varicose veins dangerous?

If your varicose veins are a new symptom, it's best to discuss the issue with your doctor. In rare cases, varicose veins can be a sign of a circulatory problem. They may also cause complications if you have certain chronic health issues.

For most patients, varicose veins are only a cosmetic concern. If you're in good health, it's unlikely that your varicose veins will cause serious illness.

But varicose veins can make your legs feel achy or uncomfortable, and you may also feel unhappy with the appearance of your varicose veins. Fortunately, treatment can help.

What are my treatment options?

Many different therapeutic techniques can help treat varicose veins. At Delta Aesthetics, Dr. Ness uses sclerotherapy to shrink enlarged veins. During a sclerotherapy procedure, he injects a medicine called Asclera into the affected veins.

Asclera causes the walls of the vein to swell up and stick together. Over time, the vein seals itself off. Once blood is no longer flowing through the vein, it shrinks and disappears. Blood flow is then re-routed through healthy veins.

What results can I expect from sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a highly effective treatment for varicose veins. The procedure is noninvasive, so there's no need to undergo surgery or take time off work. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities soon after their procedure.

After your treatment, you may need to wear compression stockings and avoid intense physical activity for a few weeks. Dr. Ness will let you know when it's safe to stop wearing your stockings and resume your usual routine.

Sclerotherapy often eliminates varicose veins in just a few weeks, but in some cases, you may need several treatments to get rid of a stubborn vein.
